Two main bridges cross the Neckar from the Altstadt: at the western end, north of Bismarck Platz, is the Theodor-Heuss-Brücke; north of the Markt is the Alte Brücke(also know as Karl-Theodor-Brücke).
Alte Brücke
To get the most out of the town walk, begin at the Alte Brücke. The statue of Prince Harl Theodor refers to the local legend that hefathered almost 200 illegitmate cjildren. At the base of the bridge is a statue of a brass monkey holding a mirror and surrounded by mice. Touch the mirror for wealth; the out stretched fingers to ensure you return to Heidelberg; and the mice to ensure you have many children.

Der Schlangenweg verbindet am steilen Hang des nördlichen Neckarufers die Alte Brücke mit dem Heidelberger Philosophenweg. Auf einem sehr steilen, einen knappen halben Kilometer langen Weg wird der Höhenunterschied zwischen Neckarufer und den Gärten des Philosophenweges überwunden. Hinter fast jeder Kurve gibt es rondell-artig gemauerte Sitzecken.
